Who does Community Grief Support help?
CGS is a safe place where people grieving the death of a loved one can find hope and healing and meet with others who have had this experience and understand. Together they learn how to regain control of their lives in an environment of care, comfort and healing.
Who provides this help?
Our Clinical Director Steve Sweatt, LPC/LMFT, supervises our Grief support groups, our counselors, and our volunteers. Together, they provide grief counseling and facilitate our support groups. All of our counselors and volunteers are trained in bereavement. Volunteers who have experienced a personal loss share with support groups.
Can anyone come to CGS for grief support?
Any bereaved adult, 19 years or older, is welcome to participate in our support groups or receive grief counseling. Whatever your loss – spousal, parent, sibling, adult child, grandparent – CGS is here for you. Whether yours is a recent loss or one which occurred in the past, if you are struggling with your grief, you are welcome here.
What will it cost me?
Not one cent! All CGS services are FREE.
So, who pays for the service?
Caring foundations, businesses, faith-based organizations and individuals fund these services through their grants and gifts. See “Supporters”.
Are CGS services available in my part of town?
Yes, we have support groups throughout the Greater Birmingham area including Homewood, Riverchase, Pelham, Trussville, Huffman, Midtown/Downtown, Inverness/Greystone, Pratt City, and Walker County as well. We offer FREE individual, couples and family counseling from our office in Homewood on Oxmoor Road across from Dawson Memorial Baptist Church.
A lot of your meetings are in churches – is CGS affiliated with any religious group?
No. CGS has no religious affiliation. Many churches offer us the use of their facilities free of charge as a service to the community.
