MAKING
A DIFFERENCE
When
CGSS signed up for the Regions Charity Classic “Birdies
for Charity” fund-raising program last February
we had no idea if we could raise enough to make it
worth while. But it sounded like fun, and whatever we
raised, we got back – so it was a win/win situation.
A group of CGSS volunteers formed a committee, set a goal
of $10,000.00 and went to work.
In the next three months,
we found ourselves consistently among the top five fund-raisers.
That encouraged us to try to finish among the top three
places – each of which would receive a bonus. When
we fell to 6th place in April, our Committee put on a
full-court press, bringing in corporate as well as more
individual support.
We submitted our final
donations on May 19 -- $17,016.57 – and waited for
the results. On June 18 we learned that Community Grief
Support was No. 1 and had earned a $10,000 bonus!
In December, the Regions
Charity Classic nominated CGSS for the PGA Champions Tour
national competition for Charity of the Year. We were
among 29 competing charities and didn’t think we
had much of a chance against “the biggies”.
Two weeks ago we learned that Community Grief Support
Service had been selected as the PGA Champions Tour “2008
Charity of the Year” and we would receive $30,000!
You can read more about it in the press release below.
At Community Grief Support we like to think of ourselves
as “a little nonprofit making a BIG difference”.
With this check from the Champions Tour, CGSS will make
a much BIGGER difference in 2009!
It
is incredible to realize that only $53 in donations earned
$40,000 in awards to Community Grief Support Service!
That was the difference in funds raised by the 1st and
2nd place charities. And that made it possible for CGSS
to compete nationally, based on our Mission, services
and plans to use the award.
CGSS
extends heartfelt thanks to the Birdies for Charity Committee
who worked for four months gathering donations and never
gave up, the businesses, organizations and individuals
who gave generous support, the members of our Board and
Advisory Board who pledged and solicited on our behalf,
Commercial Printing Company for donating their services,
and the volunteers who folded flyers, stuffed envelopes
and staffed booths. We went for a “Birdie”,
but you gave us a “Hole in One!”
